About
Emma Peers is an established artist living and working at StudionAme in Leicester. She recently just received an MA in Contemporary Arts Practice Fine from De Montfort University.
Her recent work, What’s Your Thread Length?, reimagines a lipstick bullet as a large-scale steel sculpture, exposing tensions between femininity, sexualised expectation, and power. Rooted in lived experience, it contrasts male sexual aggression with the moral scrutiny imposed on women, literalising this imbalance through collisions of masculine materials and feminine forms.
Building on themes from her 2023 solo exhibition Pink Collared Worker, Peers explores the invisibility and objectification of women in blue-collar industries. Influenced by artists such as Mona Hatoum and Claes Oldenburg, she uses scale, industrial materials, and absurd juxtapositions to parody power structures and destabilise binary ideas of strength, vulnerability, and sexuality.
Combining feminist theory, material experimentation, and self-ethnography, Peers provokes both discomfort and laughter, inviting viewers to reconsider who controls the narratives of gender, labour, and desire.
